The Lesson

We can learn something
from their flight
you said
that’s why we’re here
watching the sparrows
flit from branch to branch
studying how they blink
before takeoff
making sure that the sky
will be there once
they arrive
we analyze how they
widen their chests
to conquer the space
before their wings
harness the air
we see how each one
knows the other’s true
path and stays out
of their way
we can learn something
from these birds
you say and
blinked your eyes
and I blinked
mine too, the world
is still here so we
widen our hearts
and soar into our kiss
dizzying the air and
widening space
the sparrows study us now
then glide off in pairs
touching wing to wing
perfecting the love dance
they just learned from us
