The Enlightenment

We are the Enlightenment.
To think otherwise
would be irrational.

To dream beyond borders,
To see beyond the sea,
Around the horizon
– a ball-shaped illusion
of liquid and gas –
Stretching the gaze toward where
Sailors on the sea and
Horsemen on the plains
travel.

The image and the word must play.
Bounce around against each other.
Ping pong in a tumbler
With a jet of air
Randomizing their movements
Until the correct sequence
Of numbers self-selects
The digits between your fingers.

Whatever else
you may be thinking,
It’s about property.
How is something owned.
How does one make it
do one’s bidding.

Nature
– snarl –
That beast,

One does not fight Gaea
or Poseidon.
One does not hide from them.
One works with the gods
Not against them. One figures.
One negotiates.
Makes the bargain.
Delivers
the sacrifice.

And in the background,
Chaos.
