I was leaving the big import store, Hwang’s on 40th, through the parking lot in my van, with two cows in the trailer, and I turned down the exit, which was a raised wooden structure. I had done this before, but Hwang had had it rebuilt since last time, and I realized too late, halfway down, that there was a turn onto a stairway, and I didn’t think my van could make that. And I couldn’t back up either. I got my helper to take the smaller heifer out of the back, but the two-year-old wasn’t going anywhere. I went to find Hwang. He was calm. The truck was going to have to make the turn onto the stairs without a wheel going over the edge. Then hopefully the suspension would hold. It was only one flight. Hwang was not much help, but he directed with his hands and shouts. The cow was surprised when we turned down the stairs. She mooed for all she was worth. It was a rough one. The stairs held; the suspension did too. At the bottom we loaded the heifer back in. Next time I’ll go the other way.
