We got high by the lake
where we used to talk
for hours. Today, we
just sat — side by side
and felt the warmth of
the sun on our arms
and on our faces.
My tongue danced
against the cage
of my teeth — clenched
tight — wanting so badly
to shape and form the
words I was supposed
to say.
Instead, the silence grew
like weeds in a garden as
an aging couple watches
from the window — too
tired to do anything about
it, with not enough time left
to care.
So there we sat, by the
lake, getting high, where
we used to talk for hours.
And the sun set,
and we left alone,
and we never came back,
and even the weeds died too.
