To a Pacifist

Think of it this way, everything that lives
fights. You fought to be born, though you don’t
remember. And you’re still fighting every day
to stay alive. Yes, you are. Your non-violent
vegetarian peace activist’s body is fighting
a viral infection right now, which your white blood cells
found while patrolling your blood and tissues
in search of anything foreign. Even as you raise aloft
your STOP THE XENOPHOBES sign, marching
in the anti-war protest, you are launching an immune attack
to take out the foreign invaders. And that’s the real reason
you’re looking so flushed and feeling so strongly
like you need to find a toilet, chanting with great feeling,
arms linked with your passionate, febrile comrades,
singing your ingenuous songs of peace.
